Net Energy Metering in CA Powering Autonomy With Resilience & Reliability

Net Energy Metering

A Smart Approach to Solar Savings

Net Energy Metering (NEM) is a cornerstone policy in California that significantly influences how solar energy and battery storage users are compensated for the electricity they generate and send back to the grid. This framework directly impacts homeowners who are customers of the state's major investor-owned utilities, such as PG&E, SCE, and SDG&E.

What is Net Energy Metering (NEM)?

Net metering is a billing mechanism that allows solar energy system owners to receive credits for surplus electricity they generate and feed back into the grid. These credits help offset the cost of electricity drawn from the grid when the solar panels aren’t producing enough power to meet the household’s energy needs. It's not just about saving money—it's about empowering homeowners with control over their energy production and consumption.

  • Our Guarantee to You
We offer a comprehensive Trifecta guarantee that covers for parts, labor and production for 25 years.
  • The Most Reliable Home Energy Provider

  • We're Committed to Educating
Solar is complicated and SolarUnion is here to educate homeowners not to push sales. We hire solar advocates, not sales reps.
  • We Respect the Roof
We treat our customers' roofs like they are our own. An install will not be rushed if it means jeopardizing the integrity of the roof.

Key Features of NEM

  • Value of Solar Energy Credits: NEM uses the "Avoided Cost Calculator" (ACC) to determine the value of solar energy credits. This innovative tool ensures that solar energy producers receive fair compensation for their contributions to the grid.
  • Emphasis on Energy Storage: One of NEM’s goals is to integrate battery storage with solar systems. By storing excess energy during low-demand periods and using it during peak times, homeowners can significantly enhance their clean energy savings.
  • Support for Grid Stability: NEM ensures that the costs of maintaining the electrical grid are shared more equitably among all users, including those with solar systems. This promotes long-term sustainability and stability within California’s energy infrastructure.

    "I highly recommend this company."
SolarUnion is one of the very few companies that will install solar on a foam roof. Their team was incredible in the way they staged the project and worked together with the roofing company. First the roofers ripped off my old composite shingles and repaired the roof. SolarUnion installed brackets that anchor the solar panels on the bare plywood base. The roofers came back to spray foam to seal the brackets and completed the foam roof. Then SolarUnion came back to install the panels on the brackets that were now sealed in with foam. I'm telling you, this company goes the distance. The team at SolarUnion was magnificent in every way. From the first contact with Karissa, the sales rep who explained everything from the get go, to Andreis and his crew who gave 110 percent in getting everything right during the process. All the while, Itzel, the project manager oversaw the permits and checked in to make sure things were going smoothly.
